Samburu National Reserve - A place of endless skies, dust-red plains and palm-fringed rivers, Samburu National Reserve lies on the fringes of the vast and arid desert once known as the Northern Frontier District, whose heat-scorched scrublands extend all the way to the jade-green waters of Lake Turkana and beyond. Physically dramatic, the 104 sqkilometre landscape of the Reserve features rocky battlements, craggy scarps, dry river beds and fallen boulders rising out of the thorn scrub against a backdrop of the far-distant hills and the great red table mountain known as Lololokwi.

Your day begins with a sumptuous breakfast served at the city hotel followed by check out. You will be transferred to Wilson airport for your morning scheduled flight to Samburu National Reserve. Met on arrival and transferred to majestically situated Sasaab Lodge - a Moroccan themed camp with 9 rooms, overlooking the Ewaso Nyiro River (Kenya’s third largest watercourse). Sasaab commands breathtaking views across the arid landscape of the Northern Frontier District towards the jagged peak of Mt Kenya, and offers a truly different safari experience.

Samburu is also known as one of the two regions where conservationist Joy Adams raised Elsa the Lioness, later made famous in the book and movie, Born Free, and the Samburu people are close relatives to the Masai People sharing the similar traditional code comprising of blankets, shukas and beautifully crafted jewelry pieces. On a visit to the Samburu village you will experience various traditional activities such as cattle, goat and camel herding, making of traditional ornaments, milking of goats and many more. In the evening you will head back to your lodge, have dinner and stay overnight.

Huge herds of plains game, black mane lion, leopard, cheetah, large numbers of elephant, and a wide variety of other birds and animals frequent the Mara’s tree flecked grasslands. Two full days to appreciate the richness of the park’s wildlife and track game over the endless savannah. Huge herds of plains game, lion, leopard, cheetah, large numbers of elephant, and a wide variety of other birds and animals frequent the Mara’s tree flecked grasslands. There are several areas of dense hippo and crocodile populations in the bends of the traversing Mara River; some Mara crocs are longer than 15 feet. Set in the heart of Africa’s Great Plains, the Masai Mara boasts 1,672 sq. kilometres of unspoilt wilderness. It offers the best game and bird-viewing not only in Kenya, but anywhere in Africa. The views across the rolling golden grasslands studded with acacia trees, rivers and forests are dazzling, the sense of space overwhelming. Throughout the year the Masai Mara is a place of natural drama, a kaleidoscope of colour and life. The famed “Big Five” – elephant, rhino, lion, leopard and buffalo – roam the reserve, together with hundreds of other species, from the fastest animal on earth, the cheetah to crocodiles and magnificent birds of prey.

The main activity in the Masai Mara is game drives, which take place early in the morning and late in the afternoon when the predators are most active. Sala’s Camp merges tradition with understated luxury and has the good fortune to be located on the convergence of two rivers, and in the heart of the Masai Mara. This secluded spot offers tranquility, and tremendous views over the Sand River towards Tanzania and the Serengeti.
