Mzansi, as the locals call South Africa, is a fusion of diverse cultures and vibrant people. Born out of a painful past of racial segregation under an apartheid government, the rainbow nation – fondly named so by Archbishop Desmond Tutu post-apartheid – is a beautiful African country.

It successfully transitioned to democracy from a system of apartheid that divided people according to their race, favouring white people and oppressing other racial groups. After historic elections in 1994, Nelson Mandela became the first democratically elected and first black president of South Africa.

South Africa has 11 official languages, representing the different cultural groups and regions of the country. It is known for its great weather – there is year-round sunshine in most parts of the country, making it a great tourism destination. It also boasts amazing views, and there is plenty to do on the southern tip of Africa. From safari adventures to charming coastal getaways filled with a variety of activities, you won’t be short of a good experience in Mzansi.

South Africa is one of the very few places on Earth where you’re able to tick off all of the Big 5 (elephant, buffalo, rhino, lion and leopard) in one day – arguably one of the best reasons to visit South Africa. The country is one of the world’s finest Big 5 safari destinations thanks to its outstanding conservation areas and national parks such as:

  • Kruger National Park and its private game reserves like Sabi Sands, Thornybush, Londolozi, MalaMala, Lion Sands and Dulini
  • Madikwe Game Reserve
  • Phinda Game Reserve
  • Pilanesberg National Park
  • Addo Elephant National Park
