NGORONGORO CRATER & SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK

The most famous and largest of Tanzania’s national parks is the Serengeti. The Serengeti ecosystem extends beyond the national park to include several other conservation areas and reserves, including the Masai Mara in Kenya. It is through these extensive protected areas that a million or more wildebeest and hundreds of thousands of zebra and gazelles complete their great circulatory migration in search of green pasture. Where there is such a large mobile meat supply there are predators and Serengeti is renowned for its impressive lion sightings. Silver-backed jackals, spotted hyenas, cheetah, eagles and vultures are also avid consumers of this endless source of meat and little goes to waste.

Serengeti means ‘endless plains’ in Masai language. Much of the landscape comprises vast open savannahs dotted with acacia trees and few rocky hillocks. The park hosts a vast variety of wildlife including buffaloes, giraffe, elephant, various herbivores and of course large prides of lion and other cats whose numbers are sustained by the continual supply of meal tickets of the four legged variety.

DAY 1: DEPART TO NGORONGORO CRATER FOR A GAME DRIVE
Pick you up at the hotel in Arusha at 7:00 am, collect your packed lunch boxes and drive for about 3 hours to Ngorongoro Crater (The 8th World Wonder). On arrival, descend to this unique and enormous crater for a game drive until early evening.
Ngorongoro Crater: It is a deep, volcanic crater, un-flooded and unbroken caldera in the world, it?s about 200 kms across, 600 kms deep and 300 sq. kms in area, the Ngorongoro Crater is a breathtaking natural wonder.
As a UNESCO World Heritage Site the crater offers a unique biosphere which has remained virtually unchanged since the dawn of time. There are very few places in the world where you can find such a large population of wildlife throughout the year. Deep within the crater, enclosed by towering walls, you have a good chance of spotting „The Big 5?: Lion, elephant, buffalo, rhino and leopard. For the latter two you need a bit of luck as they tend to shy away. Approximately 30,000 animals live on the crater floor!
In the early evening, depart to Serengeti arriving in the late evening, and transfer you to the camp, check-in and later get your hot dinner, and spend the overnight at Serengeti Heritage Tented Camp (lunch & dinner included)

And it is in this time of the year (February) where the wildebeests migrate and gather on the southern part of the Serengeti for their calving season.
Every year, triggered by rains, more than a million wildebeest, 200,000 zebra and 300,000 Thomson gazelle gather to undertake their long trek to new grazing lands. The rutting season is a frenzied three week bout of territorial conquest and mating, followed by a survival of the fittest as the 40km long column of animals plunges through crocodile infested waters on their annual exodus north. The species are replenished during the brief population explosion that produces more than 80,000 calves a day before the 1000km return pilgrimage begins. Return in the late evening and stay the night at Serengeti KatiKati Tented Camp (breakfast, lunch & dinner included)
